This guide provides an introduction in identifying and selecting resources on the topic of Family Law.  This guide is not intended to be comprehensive, but it should give you guidance in how to research Family Law topics.

"Family Law" is a broad category of law that applies to many distinct legal issues, including:

  • Spousal Support
  • Adoption
  • Child Support
  • Child Custody
  • Divorce
  • Marital Property/Community Property
  • Domestic Relations
  • Marriage Law

Family law, like most areas of law, is highly dependent on the jurisdiction.  This guide is focused on California Law, with some instruction on how to find generally applicable law or other state's statutes.  If your research expands into other states' state law, it is recommended that you consult a state-specific research guide before you begin your research.
